A great day was had at Grass Roots of Wigan on September 20th at Fur Clemt.
We heard back from folk who had previous funding, including:
Neil of Forum of Aspull, Whelley and New Springs
Maisie and her crafty picnic in the park
Poet Dave from Community Corner
Kate from Friends of Greenslate Water Meadows (FROGS)
Kintsugi Therapy's mindful craft sessions for young people
Standish Snooker Socials for dads
The yellow brick road at Sunshine House's workshop area
We then shared a new funding pot of £2,857.50 between 7 great community ideas
There were 5 ideas from the smaller (up to £250) pot and 2 in the larger (up to £1,000) pot.
The following pitchers spoke about their ideas and answered the group's questions, before votes were held to decide what and how much to fund (this is "participatory budgeting" to give it its posh term!):
• Dionne of Complete Kindness - outdoor yoga sessions
• Community Patch CiC - Xmas wreath workshops
• Lisa from the Family Activities Club - Halloween costumes for teen and adult helpers
• Billinge Bat Rescue - bat detectors, voice amplifier for tours
• Brighter Better Orrell - Happy To Chat bench at East Mount pocket park
• Nic from Orrell - Room hire, small business set-up costs
• Imelda of Mindful by Nature - Parachute sail cover for outdoor events, first aid course
...and they all took a share of the pie home with them.
And talking of pies, we shared some tasty ones made by one of our founders, Clare.
We also welcomed Tom from Standish Community Choir, who came to see what GRoW was all about and ended up leading a sing-song!
Thanks to Alice and Fur Clemt for the space.
It’s beautiful to see all the collaborations growing from this space and possibilities for the future.
We’re planning a Christmas social and skills share on Sunday 7th December 10.30-1pm and the next pitching event takes place on Sunday 8th March 2026. , details tbc.
